Jack Bauer – The Quake Rampage

On 15, Jul 2014 | No Comments | In Editing | By vashi

The last time I hung out with Kiefer Sutherland we were playing hockey together in Los Angeles. He’s the most gracious and sensitive man in real life…but on the screen he is Jack Bauer…the ruthless man of principle who does whatever it takes to get things done. Tonight was the series finale of 24 and this epic TV show went out in a blaze of glory. Jack Bauer exacted ultimate revenge upon an evil foe then sacrificed himself to save a true friend. It was an emotional and logically satisfying end to a ground-breaking TV series.

The last image of Jack Bauer ever…

The rampage that Jack Bauer carries out in the last few minutes of 24:LAD is monumental. Fueled by the loss of his true love…he goes ballistic. It reminded me of playing QUAKE and going shit house crazy upon getting the Quad Damage Power Up.

I decided to merge the worlds of Cinema and Video Games into this 2 minute video. I’m sure that soon…this level of realism will be commonplace and executable by everyone with a gaming device. It’s the years of investment into the characters and story that makes this rampage extra special as 24 exits stage right and into the pantheon of exceptional television history. It’s been a hell of a ride…

Until next time…

Inside the FOX Studios Lot

FOX Studios aerial

FOX STUDIOS – Century City aerial view

In 1928, FOX opened their studios in Century City, California. In 1935, FOX merged with 20th Century Pictures and those studios went on to create some of the most memorable films and TV shows of all time. I had the pleasure of working on the FOX lot during the last couple of weeks and took some behind the scenes photos during my stay. Pure Hollywood History!

Shows shot here include: Avatar, The Simpsons, M*A*S*H, The Sound of Music, L.A. Law, Charlie’s Angels, Die Hard, Fight Club, Minority Report, House and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The sense of history you feel when you walk the lot is indescribable… Read more…

A Beautiful Man: In Memory of James Avery

On 01, Jan 2014 | No Comments | In Production | By vashi

James Avery has passed away. I had the honor of working with the Gentle Giant on a feature film I produced, shot and edited. The director Jhon Doria got James for 2 shooting days, but his role and scenes were critical to the story. James was the consummate professional, physically imposing (6 foot 5 inches) and the owner of a booming laugh that erupted frequently between takes. It was during these breaks in shooting that he regaled us with tales of his 4-year stint in the US Navy during the Vietnam War and for his love of Shakespeare and poetry. Warmth and kindness radiated out from him in waves. Even whilst confined to a wheelchair for his role…he owned the set and our hearts.

On the last day of shooting, out of nowhere, James launched into ‘The Merchant of Venice’ and became the Prince of Morocco. I was luckily rolling camera and captured an intimate moment – a moment I have not shared with anyone. Now seems like the best time to share it and show a side of James Avery you might not have been familiar with. He was a classically trained actor and a member of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Disney Research in Zurich has released a white paper (PDF) and a showreel video of their new technology DuctTake. It allows for combining and compositing of different takes into one single video…seamlessly. This has been done for over a hundred years with split screens and mattes and locked off cameras. It’s a very simple effect and a staple of trick shots done in camera. The difference with DuctTake is…it is now possible to combine and composite takes with handheld or moving cameras.
