Billionaire filmmaker Howard Hughes filmed JET PILOT (1957) a Cold War adventure-romance filmed between 1949-1953. It wasn’t released until 1957 due to Hughes’ constant tinkering with the film in post-production. Some things never change!
JET PILOT featured some of the most spectacular aerial cinematography footage ever filmed. General Chuck Yeager anonymously flew most of the aerobatics in this film. Hopefully he can confirm which planes he flew during the production. The U.S. Air Force allowed the use of its newest and most advanced military planes including:
Lockheed F-94 Starfire
Convair B-36B Peacemaker
Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star
North American B-45 Tornado
F-86A Sabre
Northrop F-89 Scorpion
Boeing B-50
and the Bell X-1 which Chuck Yeager used to break the sound barrier.
Director of Photography Winton C. Hoch used Eastman Kodak’s brand new color negative 5247 film to capture the stunning aerial vistas and supersonic airplanes.
