A RADIO EDIT is a way to edit a project (short film, feature film, music video – anything) and tell the story by laying out all the audio first.
This goes back to the original radio programs where there was ONLY audio…so rhythm, timing, inflections, pacing and everything else was in your head and you would fill the pictures in for yourself.
As a filmmaker, I lay out all the dialog / narrative audio on one timeline in order to see if the story is working.
Then I can add:
• Images
• B-roll
• Graphics
• Text
• Everything else
The Radio Edit is a powerful tool. If you can get the audio dialed in…everything else will fall into place.
It’s an effective method I use all the time and a great way to get started on a project.
Until next time…

I regularly just listen to my edit with my eyes closed. It really gives a sense of how the scene is playing between two characters. I even do it when cutting spots as it gives me a better feel for VO pacing and dialogue
Great advice. Sometimes visuals cloud your judgment. Pacing is so important to every project.
