In pre-production for RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, Steven Spielberg gave illustrator Ed Verreaux 3 scenes to storyboards over the course of a weekend as a test. Ed passed the trial and was hired for his first major feature film as a storyboard artist.
Ed was tasked with tackling the climax of the film where Belloq opens the Ark and its great power wreaks havoc upon the Nazis, cleansing them from the world with a blinding light.
Verreaux said: “At that time, Steve was using the boards purely as a communication device. He would show the boards to the crew and they would be put up on a big board on set so everyone on set knew what was happening that day.”
Ed’s storyboards are no mere stick figures giving a general idea of the shots. They are fully formed stand-alone art pieces. They express the color palette, the deep frames that are full of visual information and the emotions of the moment. My video comparison shows just how closely Spielberg followed Ed’s artwork that helped guide the final film imagery. Enjoy the video!
Until next time…
