Czech artist David Černý created his Bronze Baby sculptures in 1994 for the Chicago Museum of Modern Art. Their naked forms with vertical barcode faces speak to the dehumanization of society.

Their latest iteration can now be found in Palm Springs for the next 20 months. Each fiberglass Baby is 8 feet tall and all 10 Babies will be periodically repositioned by the artist in the sand pit located in front of the Palm Springs Art Museum.

I went to the public opening on June 6th, 2018 and used my Polaroid 680 film camera to capture the initial positioning of the 10 Babies. Here are 4 of my favorite shots of “The Palm Springs Babies” at the foot of San Jacinto Mountain in the desert of Southern California.
