Steven Soderbergh was nominated as Best Director for both TRAFFIC and ERIN BROCKOVICH at the 2001 Academy Awards. He beat out Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR), Ang Lee (CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON), Stephen Daldry (BILLY ELLIOT) and himself (ERIN BROCKOVICH).

He gave one of the best speeches ever (below) and admits to being a little drunk as he did not expect to win. Kudos!
